CHAPTER

TWENTY-NINE

Fingerless was waiting for me outside the room.

“Okay, Cayden,” he said, “we’re done with you for the day. You can go now. Your friend Anna will take you home. She’s here, being interrogated herself; standard procedure. We’ll wait for her downstairs in the lobby. Take your bag and come with me.”

I was so excited by this turn of events that I immediately picked up the pace. By too much, apparently.

“Hey, Cayden, are you trying to run away?” he said. “You know, even with only four fingers on my right hand, I can still shoot.”

Having been reminded of my status, I slowed down and followed Fingerless. As we passed by the interrogation rooms on the way to the elevator, he stopped and knocked on one of the doors.

“Hold on a minute,” he said.

The door opened and Anna emerged. She rushed over and hugged me tight. Over her shoulder, I could see Supercop, who’d been questioning her. Anna placed her hands on my cheeks.

“How are you, Cayden?” she said. “You okay?”

She had tears in her eyes. How long had she been here being interrogated? How many of my other friends were also going through this because of me? I was sure she was not the only one. I felt like shit.

Fingerless took me down to the lobby, where Anna arrived a few minutes later. “Let’s go,” she said to me with a tired smile. “I’ll take you home, to your place.”

“Ah, so you’re up first?” I said with a laugh – an ironic little laugh. “Lucky you.”

“Yes, I’m taking the first shift.”

I was greeted outside by my friend Eddie and, of course, by Megan, Babysitter #2, and I actually felt – amazingly enough – pretty good. It was the first time in two days that I was in the company of friends only, without any cops or prison guards around.

“Get in the car, Cayden,” Eddie said. “You’re going home.”

He started the engine. Anna was in the passenger seat next to him, and I sat in the back next to Megan. My armpits reeked; the stench filled the car. Mortifying.

Eddie and Megan dropped Anna and me outside my apartment building, and the two of us went up. My apartment was dirty. Very dirty. The search had uncovered a ton of dust and dirt. And two women were moving in with me. Not nice.

Seeing the condition she was in, I told Anna to go ahead and take a shower. In the meantime, I launched a cleaning assault on my bedroom, quickly sweeping and mopping the floor and changing the linens. I looked around when I was finished; good enough, for now. I then retrieved another set of linens and a blanket from the closet and took them out to the living room, for me. I also took the laundry basket and added the stuff from the Custody Kit: the change of clothing that I hadn’t used, and the sheet that I had used. Yes, I should have thrown that shitty sheet right into the trash, I know.
